The One-Page CV: What to Keep, What to Cut

Stack of resumes being reviewed on a desk

The average recruiter in Egypt spends 25 seconds scanning a CV before deciding to read on or move to the next one. That is not much time to make an impression — which is why the one-page CV has become the gold standard for most roles under senior management level.

What always stays

  • Your name, phone, email, and city (not full address)
  • A two-line professional summary tailored to the role you are applying for
  • Your last three roles, each with company, title, dates, and 2–3 bullet points of measurable achievements
  • Education: degree, university, graduation year
  • Skills that match the job description keywords

What to cut ruthlessly

  • References — "available on request" is implied
  • Photo — unless the job ad specifically asks for one
  • Full address — city and governorate is enough
  • Every job you have ever had — go back 7–10 years maximum
  • Hobbies and interests — unless they directly support the role
  • Primary school and secondary school — only university matters

Formatting tips that make a difference

Use a clean sans-serif font at 10.5–11pt. Keep margins at 1.5cm minimum. Use bold for company names and job titles, and regular weight for everything else. Save as PDF with a clear filename: "YourName-Role.pdf".

The final test

Print your CV and hold it at arm's length. If you cannot see the most important information (your name, current role, key achievement) in the top third of the page, restructure until you can.
